UKA 2013

UKA is a huge festival that takes place every two years here in Trondheim. It is 25 days of concerts, seminars, beer, and paint parties.

This year our friend Anders told us that The National was playing with The Tallest Man on Earth. Since The Tallest Man is Daniel's current favorite band, we had our tickets within the hour.

On the night of the show we feasted on moose burgers and milkshakes with the Swedes before heading over to their house for some deliciously expensive beer. Then we headed up the hill to a giant tent built over the soccer field in Dødens Dal (Death Valley) on campus. We got there early and were able to get spots right up next to the stage.

Huge tents make surprisingly good concert venues.

The Tallest Man is a one-man band from Sweden and according to Anna he is "inte så lång" (not so tall).

The National, on the other hand, is an American band consisting of approximately 40 musicians (in fairness, as many as 35 of them may have just been hipster groupies standing around holding esoteric musical instruments). The lead singer repeatedly shocked the Norwegians in the crowd by throwing alcohol onto the stage and/or crowd. They played a solid set which included many of our favorite songs.

After the show we skipped the bus queue and walked home because it was only 2,000 meters. There hasn't been a lot of music in Trondheim since we've been here but every concert we've gone to has been excellent.
